Thomas Kyd’s The Scottish Lady is a mock Renaissance tragedy in blank verse based on the short reign of Gruoch, Queen of Scotland and wife of the tyrant Macbeth. A comedy in five acts, The Scottish Lady goes behind the scenes of Shakespeare’s more famous version, revealing Gruoch’s machinations as she bribes three old women to pose as witches and set her plan in motion. Her fight against toxic masculinity is ultimately futile, however, so she takes her own life in the tragic denouement.
