In a once-upon-a-time-world, blanketed in December snow, there are shipwrecks, unrequited loves, and a frenzy of extravagant gift-giving. The love-sick Duke gives the Lady Olivia a partridge in a pear tree, which she ungraciously accepts. The kind-hearted Vesta gives the shipwrecked Viola a turtledove, but where’s its mate? Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a dim-witted buffoon, tries to find the three Cornish hens he intends to give the Lady Olivia, but his glutinous mentor, Sir Toby Belch, is already having them for a late-night supper, and so it goes… The confusion of gift-giving is compounded when Viola’s twin brother Sebastian arrives on the scene. With Viola disguised as a pageboy, the two estranged twins are indistinguishable. By the time Sir Toby taunts the obnoxious steward Malvolio with the cacophony of eleven pipers piping, it looks as though the plot will never be untangled. Only the eleventh-hour arrival of twelve drummers drumming could possibly restore order to the Dukedom in time for the twelfth night festivities. This play provides for 21 separate speaking roles and 16 non-speaking roles. Doubling is possible.
