Kit Marlowe’s Henry is a mock Renaissance tragedy based on the life of Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII and one-time contender for the throne. Fitzroy was married at 15, died at 17, and never consummated his marriage. It is a consummate tragedy. But Henry is not just a comedy about sex and erectile dysfunction written in blank verse. It is a story of a love that grows out of friendship. It is also a story of a love that turns to poison, as Anne Boleyn and her execution by her own husband plays a prominent role in the plot. This play provides for 14 speaking roles and 8 non-speaking roles. Some doubling is possible.
